Composing an ad

What to consider when drafting a job ad

Here is a checklist of items that should be carefully considered when drafting a job ad:

  • Name and details of your organisation - at the very least to prevent employees from fearing that they may be applying to their own organisation

  • Job title - full or part-time and any usual requirements such as evening or shift work

  • Description of duties involved with an indication for potential for advancement

  • Summary of essential criteria which is included in the person specification.  This should be specific and focused, but omitting anything that is not essential, to avoid too many people screening themselves out

  • Salary and benefits package

  • Geographical area

  • Equal opportunities statement

  • Internet reference

  • Closing date for applications

  • What to do next
