    Home-working in the UK

    The Office for National Statistics reported yesterday (4 June) that more than four million people now work from home. This figure equates to nearly 14% of those in work and is the highest figure since comparable records began in 1998.

    Some facts about home-working from the report:

    • Those who work from home tend to carry out higher skilled roles than those who don’t work from home
    • 50% of those working from home are working as managers, associate professionals or professionals
    • The most common roles for male home workers were among construction occupations, while for women the top roles included child-minding and care work
    • 63% of home workers are self-employed
    • The home working rate is higher among older age groups – 38% if those over 65 who work do so from home
    • With the exception of older workers (aged 65 and older) homeworkers are more likely to use their home as a base rather than work within the grounds of their home
    • The South West of England has the highest level of home-workers, followed by the South East of England


    Flexible working

    At the moment, only those who care for a child or adult have the legal right to request flexible working. But did you know that from the end of this month this right is extended to all employees who have worked for their current employer for more than 26 weeks?

    From 30 June, employees have the right to make one ‘flexibility request’ a year – and employers have a legal obligation to deal with requests in a reasonable manner and within a reasonable timeframe. Employers will have the right to turn down requests on business grounds.
