Replying to your ad

This is usually a fairly simple task, given that the the ad usually tells you the steps to follow. However, we recommend that you consider the following points:

  • Read the ad and decide whether to apply or not. Remember that you don't have to meet all the criteria specified in the job profile.  However, if you meet only half the criteria, it's probably not worth applying.  Or maybe you need more information about the post on offer, in which case be proactive in calling or sending a message to the employer or recruitment agency to find out more.
  • If you decide to apply, note where and when you saw the ad. You will need to refer to it when writing your application letter.
  • Pay attention to the deadline for applications and  plan your time so that you're not rushing to apply at the last minute. In fact, these days it's best to apply as soon as possible if you're keen as employers sometime close a vacancy early if they are overwhelmed with applications.
  • Make sure you follow the format requested.. Do they require a CV and cover letter or for you to complete an application form? If an application form, does it need to be completed online or sent by post?
  • Review the ad and highlight key skills and experience that the employer is looking for. These are very important points to address in your application.
  • Keep a copy of your application for future reference and if the ad is online make sure you print off a copy as you will need to refer to it if you are offered an interview
